Frequently Asked Questions – WestDerm Group

Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist?

Yes, a valid referral from your general practitioner or specialist is required to schedule an appointment in any of our practices. This referral is necessary to access Medicare rebates. Referrals from GP’s are valid for 12 months, specialist referrals are valid for 3 months.

Please note a referral is typically required for medical laser treatments.

What should I expect during my appointment?

During your consultation:

  • The dermatologist/GP with an interest in skin will discuss your concerns and take a comprehensive medical history, including previous treatments, current medications, allergies, and relevant family history.
  • Depending on the reason for your presentation, a thorough skin examination may be conducted to assess of all areas of your skin. As some conditions may manifest in less visible regions, please inform your doctor if you prefer certain areas not to be examined or if you would like a chaperone present.
  • Based on the findings, the doctor will explain the likely diagnosis and discuss a management plan. This may include further investigations such as skin biopsies, swabs, blood tests, or imaging, as well as prescribing topical or systemic treatments. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor your progress and further fees will apply.
